Welcoming all to The Terraces

Following on from a thesis project at university, I created The Terraces, a green university that intends to help educate people to learn new skills and to get them back into the working sector. A key aim for the university is to be welcoming and accommodating to all sectors of society. Transforming the building into a tangible project and crafting a website for it poses a significant and exciting challenge.

The Challenge

Designing a website for a new university comes with its set of challenges. It's about establishing a brand identity and digital presence from scratch. Creating a visually appealing and user-friendly website that aligns with the university's values and mission can be complex. The challenge also involves organising content, from program details and faculty information to admission processes and campus facilities, in a way that's clear and accessible to various user groups.

Moreover, ensuring the website is accessible and responsive to different devices and user needs is necessary. This requires adhering to web accessibility standards and performing usability testing. Safeguarding user data and maintaining website security is another critical concern, especially considering the sensitive information often handled by universities.

The solution

  • Crafting a website that reflects the institution's values, mission, and academic offerings while appealing to prospective students, faculty, and staff.

  • Develop a brand identity that aligns with the core principles and reflects them in the website's design elements, such as color schemes and logos.

  • Employ a well-structured information architecture that divides content into clear categories, making it easy for users to find what they need.

  • Utilise responsive web design principles to ensure the website works seamlessly on various devices and screen sizes.

An app for students

With a focus on enhancing the overall university experience, the app provides students with a user-friendly platform that offers a wide array of benefits. Based on the desktop version, the app serves as an indispensable tool for students to stay organised and informed. The navigation and interactive features make finding essential resources such as course information, facilities and additional advice easy.

User Research

A key undertaking for this project was understanding user behaviours and needs through observation techniques. This was achieved mainly through interviews of the target audience for The Terraces.

Students

The app and website will be utilised by students of various ages, highlighting the importance of seamless functionality and accessibility. Quick access to information is essential for their needs.
